Policy, Management & People

  1. CE Changes Stuff profiled Auckland Uni’s incoming VC, Dawn Freshwater (she starts in March 2020). Otago Poly CE Phil Ker has agreed to have his contract extended from Dec 2019 to 12 Jun 2020, to help get the Poly through the initial ROVE restructure.
  2. VE Reforms The Stand Up for SIT campaign is gearing up again. The Road Transport Forum CEO (and a just-appointed MITO board member) was sceptical about the reforms. David Farrar said that the risk assessment of the VE reforms was damning. Invercargill’s Labour and National MPs argued and tried to get public attention. EIT hit back at criticism of its ROVE response from the Hawke’s Bay Today editor – they emphasised that they have worked with the region, and come up with a strategic response (regional leaders also met with EIT last week to talk about the reforms). National East Coast MP Anne Tolley said that the reforms would be damaging for regional education. A Gisborne Herald online poll showed support for the reforms. NMIT CE Liam Sloan wrote an op-ed that was positive about the reforms.
  3. 50th Canterbury Uni will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its journalism school next month.
  4. Measles Some medical and science students at Auckland Uni have contracted measles (Newshub).
  5. Cannabis An NZ Institute of Cannabis Education, Research, and Development is planned for Christchurch, if it gets crowdfunding.
  6. ODT Editorials ODT editorials called for INZ visa processing delays to be dealt with and supported continued funding for Telford.
  7. LSV Facility A new Limited Service Volunteers facility was opened at Trentham in Upper Hutt on Friday.

Students

  1. Small Storm Not many people tried to storm a bridge worksite near Otago Uni that has taken longer than planned to fix. The Facebook event had 1,400 “attendees”.

Stakeholders

  1. Nutrition Massey Uni’s School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition signed an MOU with Shanghai DeChi Industrial (a nutrition and supplement company).
  2. China Issues The debate about protests at Auckland Uni about Hong Kong seems to have become a back and forth between the Chinese embassy and its critics without much direct relevance to tertiary education. We’ll cover it again when it becomes more relevant to Tertiary Insight readers.

Teaching & Learning

  1. Achievement Education Central looked at last week’s Ōritetanga conference by TEC, and explored efforts by Georgia State University, Wintec and EIT to improve educational achievement for all students. It’s a good summary of some of the themes at the conference.
  2. New Degree UCOL will start offering a Bachelor of Social Services in 2020.
