News Wed 3/9 – University Reforms.

Policy, Management & People

  1. University Reforms Yesterday’s announcement on university reforms had various reactions. A media release and speech by Shane Reti have been published (the latter was at a THE event hosted at Canterbury Uni, which continues today – read more here). UNZ made a thoughtful and detailed response to the five initiatives announced by the Minister. There was a supplementary comment from UNZ’s Research Committee, noting that the PBRF replacement should not undermine fundamental research, or disadvantage the arts, humanities and social sciences. Auckland Uni had a statement making similar points. The TEU was supportive of some elements, but wanted the Government to get moving on increasing funding, which they saw as the underlying problem. Business NZ supported the new Tertiary Education Strategy priorities that support economic growth (no link). NewstalkZB spoke to University Advisory Group chair Prof Sir Peter Gluckman, with a focus on entry and academic standards. Newsroom had a long and detailed review that is worth a read.   2. TEU Events The TEU will host online conferences on secure work (7 Nov) and AI in tertiary education (31 Oct). On the latter issue, Ara has just formally launched its AI in Vocational Education and Training book.
  3. People Former Massey Uni academic, and regular media commentator, Steve Stannard has died.

Research & Innovation

  1. Māori Research Auckland Uni is hosting a Pūtaiao Symposium to explore the intersections of pūtaiao (science) and mātauranga Māori over Thu-Fri in Whangārei (Waatea News).
  2. Autism Canterbury Uni has opened an Autism Research Centre.

Students

  1. KākāpōA Massey Uni student developed a pod to helps safely transport kākāpō eggs from nests to incubators, and received a design award on the way.

Teaching & Learning

  1. Electrical Checks Otago Poly pre-trade electrical students are checking an op shop’s appliances before they go on sale (the safety checks are required by law).
  2. NZATD Conference The NZ Assn of Training and Development is holding its annual conference next week and still have some places available.
  3. Health Conditions Toitū te Waiora has received NZQA approval for a suite of long-term health condition micro-credentials. They were developed with Diabetes New Zealand, Arthritis New Zealand, Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Heart Foundation. The Open Poly plans to offer them.
  4. Writing Canterbury Uni is adding a Writing major and Writing and Creative Writing minors in 2026 (subject to CUAP approval).
  5. Ecology Massey Uni will add a Postgrad Diploma in Science and Technology, and a Master of Science, in Ecology and Conservation next year (subject to CUAP approval).
